I post them here to show the relative merits of the designs.

One of the decisions in designing a minicard is whether to put your name and some other information on the front, or to let the image have the front to itself. As you can see, I didn’t put text on any of these cards.

But I think that the four designs in the middle column work well with text, were the text to be arranged in harmony with the elements of the image. Indeed, an example using the Rainbow image (second from the top of the center column in this arrangement) is already on this very blog.

The designs in the left-hand column work well without text, I think. I particularly like the Rock Garden Bridge at the top of that column.

I don’t think that the three cards in the right-hand column turned out as well as the other seven. There are several reasons why a minicard might not turn out well: not a great image in the first place, not an image that wants to be cropped down to a 5:2 ratio (a minicard is 70×28mm), or not a good crop. For example, I think that I cropped the Zakim Bridge too closely.

I made this when I was considering using Clearspring on-page widgets. I subsequently decided to go the standard, or in-widget, route. I sketched out a comparison between on-page and in-widget approaches for anyone who’s interested.
